Merino Basics, Explained: Micron, Weight, and Where It Wins

Merino is stamped on $8 socks and $200 sweaters alike. Three published specs — micron, gauge, and weight — tell you which is which.

"Merino" gets stamped on everything from $200 sweaters to $8 socks, and the word alone tells you almost nothing. Merino is wool from Merino sheep, a breed bred for unusually fine fiber. Whether a given merino piece is soft enough to wear against skin, warm enough for winter, or durable enough to justify its price comes down to a few published specs — mainly fiber diameter, knit gauge, and weight. Learn those three numbers and you can read a merino product the way you would read a spec sheet.

Micron: the number that matters

Fiber diameter, measured in microns, is the single most important merino spec, because it governs softness and next-to-skin comfort. Finer fiber (lower micron) feels softer; coarser fiber (higher micron) feels scratchier. The rough ranges, widely cited across the wool trade:

  • Under ~17.5 micron — superfine / ultrafine. The softest, used in premium base layers and next-to-skin knits. Commands the highest price.
  • ~17.5–19.5 micron — fine. The sweet spot for next-to-skin wear; comfortable for most people as a base layer or tee. Most quality merino apparel lives here.
  • ~19.5–24 micron — medium. Fine for sweaters worn over another layer; can feel prickly directly on sensitive skin.
  • Over ~24 micron — strong / coarse. Durable and springy, better suited to outerwear knits and boot socks where a nylon blend and cushioning offset the coarseness.

The practical read: for anything touching skin, look for a stated micron in the ~17.5–19.5 range. If a brand does not publish micron, that is a gap — not published, so ask before paying up, because "merino" without a micron figure could sit anywhere on the scale. Whether a given micron feels itchy to you is individual; treat softness claims as broad consensus, not a guarantee.

Gauge and weight

Two more numbers describe the knit rather than the fiber:

  • Gauge is knit density — how many needles per inch. Higher gauge (roughly 12–18gg) is a finer, smoother, thinner knit; lower gauge (roughly 3–7gg) is chunky and warm. Gauge is why two sweaters of identical micron can feel completely different: one is a fine layering crew, the other a heavy standalone.
  • Weight, given in GSM for knits like tees and base layers, tells you how much fabric you are getting. What merino actually does

Merino's reputation rests on a few real properties, though marketing tends to inflate them. Reported consistently across published testing and broad user consensus:

  • Thermoregulation. The crimped fiber traps air and manages moisture, so merino feels warm for its weight and less clammy than synthetics across a range of temperatures.
  • Odor resistance. Merino resists odor longer than cotton or synthetics, which is why base layers and travel tees can be re-worn several times between washes. This is the property that makes merino punch above its weight in a one-bag travel capsule.
  • Moisture handling. Wool absorbs a meaningful share of its weight in moisture before feeling wet, and releases it as it dries.

These are tendencies, not miracles; how much you notice them depends on the garment and on you. Treat them as well-supported general behavior rather than performance you are guaranteed.

Blends, and why they exist

Pure merino is soft but not the most abrasion-resistant fiber, so blends are common and usually sensible:

  • Elastane / spandex in small amounts adds stretch and recovery to base layers.

A blend is not a compromise by definition — in socks it is the difference between a pair that lasts and one that wears through at the heel. Read the composition and match it to the job.

Where merino wins, and where it doesn't

It wins less clearly where those properties are irrelevant: a knockaround tee you sweat through at the gym and wash daily does not need merino's odor resistance, and cotton costs a fraction. Merino also needs gentler care and is more moth-vulnerable than synthetics. On cost-per-wear, merino tends to justify itself when it earns many wears between washes and lasts years with care — lifespan being an honest average from published durability data and consensus, varying with rotation and how carefully you wash it.

Superwash and machine-washability

Much merino apparel is "superwash"-treated — a finishing process that smooths or coats the fiber's microscopic scales so it resists felting and can be machine-washed. It makes merino far more practical for everyday clothes and socks, at a small cost to the fiber's natural hand and with an added processing step some buyers prefer to avoid. Untreated merino is more delicate and typically hand-wash-only, but keeps the raw character of the wool. Neither is wrong. The practical tell: if a piece is sold as machine-washable, it is almost certainly superwash, and for socks and daily base layers that is usually the right call. Check the care label, because how you are allowed to wash it is decided at the mill, not at the sink.

Care, briefly

Merino's one real demand is gentle laundering: cold water, a wool or delicate cycle or a hand-wash, and lay flat to dry — heat is what felts and shrinks wool. Because it resists odor, you wash it less often anyway, which extends its life. The full routine is in the merino wool care guide.
