The 12-Piece Capsule Starter Checklist
A capsule is a small set of versatile staples that mix into most of your outfits — buy fewer, wear each more. This is the twelve-piece starting frame we build from, with the spec to check on each. Printable, no fluff. Treat it as a starting point, not a shopping mandate: start from what you already wear and fill only the real gaps.
What's inside
- The twelve staples that cover most weeks — with the fabric weight and fit to check on each.
- Why neutral colors that combine raise how often each piece gets worn, and lower cost per wear.
- Where to spend and where to save, judged by cost per wear rather than sticker price.
- How to build from what you already own instead of buying the whole list at once.
The twelve pieces
- Two heavyweight crewneck tees (aim ~200+ GSM) — one white, one neutral.
- One oxford-cloth button-down (OCBD) in white or light blue.
- One pair of dark, straight-leg jeans in a mid-weight denim (roughly 12–14 oz).
- One pair of mid-weight chinos (about 9–11 oz) in a neutral.
- One merino or lambswool crewneck sweater for layering.
- One overshirt or light jacket that layers over a tee or shirt.
- One resoleable leather shoe or boot (Goodyear-welt or Blake) in brown or black.
- One pair of clean, minimal white leather sneakers.
- A solid full-grain leather belt that matches your main shoe leather.
- Well-fitting underwear plus a few pairs of durable, cushioned socks.
- One casual sweatshirt or hoodie for weekends.
- One piece of outerwear built for your climate — a waxed jacket, overcoat, or shell.
Buy fewer, better, verified. The point of a capsule is not to own twelve new things — it is to own twelve things you actually reach for. Upgrade the gaps in what you already wear, and let cost per wear, not the sale, decide what is worth it.
