Denim Weight (oz)
Denim weight is quoted in ounces per square yard. Rough bands: under 12 oz is lightweight (comfortable, drapes, less rugged), 12–16 oz is the mid-weight sweet spot for everyday jeans, and 16 oz and up is heavyweight — stiff, extremely durable, slow to break in, and sharp-fading. Heavier is not automatically better; it is a comfort-versus-toughness-versus-fade trade. Summer favors lighter, hard use and fade-chasing favor heavier. It is the first denim spec to check, and it sets expectations for break-in time, warmth, and how the jean will wear over years.
